The Peru Police Department hosts the “Officer Dale Charbonneau citizen police academy.” Dale worked 20 years as a Peru police officer who passed away in 2009. He was an accomplished and highly respected officer with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, organized, and started the Peru Citizens Police Academy. It is with great respect that we named the academy in Dale’s name.

The next academy is tentatively scheduled to start in the spring of 2020 and will run for 10 consecutive Thursday evenings. A ride along with Peru police officers on patrol and class at the Peru police gun range will be scheduled separately from the Thursday evening classes. The academy will be held in the Ron Wren Community Room at Peru city hall with a graduation and social hour on the final evening.

The academy will again be open to residents of the City of Peru, 21 years of age or older, who are interested in learning more about how their police department operates and the policing challenges facing the City of Peru.

The class will meet once a week in the evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30pm pm for a 10- week course. The curriculum has been designed to be informative as well as beneficial, and will be presented in a manner that is enjoyable for everyone who attends.

Participants will learn different aspects of the police department, including a tour of the police station, a K-9 demonstration, and work of police detectives, community policing programs, crime scene techniques, and much more.

The instructors of the academy will be Peru Police Officers and other members of the Criminal Justice System. One goal of the academy is to nurture a growing pool of responsible, well-informed citizens with the potential to influence public opinion about police practices and services. The class size will be limited to 30 students.

Classes fill up quickly and so we wanted to get the word out to those that may be interested in attending.
